1. NEW! Rapid Access to Consultative Expertise (RACE)is a new service in Fraser Health
Rapid Access to Consultative Expertise (RACE) is a service whereby family physicians (FPs) can call one number, choose from a selection of specialty services and be connected directly to that particular specialist within a matter of minutes. RACE ED connects the FP to an emergency medicine physician for questions about patient care.
The RACE ED physicians will be covering call for both Coastal and Fraser Health and will have a list of services available at each hospital. This will reduce the number of incoming phone calls to local emergency physicians and direct the patients to the point of care with the most appropriate services available.
Patients that have spoken to the RACE ED physician and have been referred to your ED will be preceded by a faxed information sheet regarding the referral.
To speak to an ED physician call the RACE line at 604-696-2131 or for more information on RACE ED go towww.RACEconnect.ca

6. A GP for Me: Team Based Care
The Division has been supporting clinics to pilot Team Based Care approaches with either a Nurse in Practice or a GP Extender. Nurses and/or GPE’s are assisting GP’s by taking both clinical and non-clinical services off the GP’s plate to increase capacity and satisfaction. Patients are appreciative of the extra time the nurse can provide as well! As a result of having a nurse in practice, 195 patients have been attached so far because of the capacity experienced by GP’s in the pilot. In the fall, the Division will be sharing a business case and orientation manual for clinics interested in implementing Team Based Care in their practices.
After only three months, GPs participating in the pilot projects have noted that important benefits are accruing to patients, doctors and their staff. It is also becoming clear that the business model works, is sustainable and has the potential of resulting in significant revenue increases.
To support MOA’s with advanced training, UFV is offering an Advanced MOA Training program this fall that is developed with working professionals in mind. This program aligns well with the GP Extender project, and provides further training for MOA”s to be able to assist GP’s in a greater capacity with non-clinical supports. Click here for more info on this program.

7. Need a Locum?
The Ridge Meadows Division of Family Practice continues to strive towards supporting and recruiting Locums to our area as requested by our members. In our continued efforts to support our local GP community, we recently purchased a membership to the Society of General Practitioners of BC Locum Service, valid until December 31, 2015. This website allows us to post local Locum positions, in both short and long term capacities.
If you are interested in posting a locum potion, please click to fill out this form that you will submit directly to the Division, and we will take care of ensuring your locum needs are posted with the Service. All applications will be sent directly to the corresponding GP.
Should you have any questions or concerns, or would benefit from some assistance filling the form out for the first time, please do not hesitate to reach out for support, as we want to ensure this initiative is utilized to its highest potential. 11. MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition…Do It!) is a FREE, fun healthy living program for children aged 7-13 Download poster
MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition…Do It!) is a FREE, fun healthy living program for children aged 7-13 who are above a healthy weight. It is a 10 week family-based education program designed to help children and their families get fitter, healthier and happier. The program facilitates safe, effective and lasting lifestyle changes by improving children’s physical activity levels, nutrition and self-esteem.
Families take part in fun 2-hour sessions twice a week for 10 weeks that combine active living (physical exercise), healthy eating and behaviour change. The first hour is interactive discussions and activities about nutrition and behaviour change for the family. The second hour involves continued discussion for the parents while the children engage in fun, physical activities. By attending MEND:
- Families learn about all aspects of nutrition, including how to make healthy food choices.
- They learn how to read food labels, understand fats and sugars and the difference between refined and unrefined foods and how to prepare a healthy balanced meal.
- They learn how to change their eating and exercise habits through mind exercises such as setting goals and rewards and how being active can be fun.
MEND is not a weight loss program, rather it is about empowering children and their families, and uses a practical interactive learning approach to teach children and parents skills for healthy living.
MEND was developed and tested by some of the UK’s leading experts in child nutrition, child behaviour and exercise. In 2011, MEND was adapted to align with Canadian dietary and policy guidelines.
Independent research shows that the MEND program helps children lose weight, increase their physical activity levels and self-esteem and reduce sedentary behaviours.
Program location: Maple Ridge
10 week session starting: October, 2015

12. Changes to GPSC fee codes to help with billing
Guided by local division feedback, the GPSC has adjusted its incentive fee codes - particularly the A GP for Me codes - in an effort to clarify, align, and coordinate the GPSC incentives. Effective August 1, the changes will affect documentation and timing requirements, condition-based payments, and eligibility. Visit the GPSC website for details and a one-page reference guide.
